MOHAIR FIBRE

Mohair is also known as the “Diamond Fibre” and comes from an Angora Goat.

What is Mohair Fibre?

Mohair is the fibre produced by an Angora Goat. The qualities of the fibre include its lustre, its ability to retain dyes, crease resistance, strength, lightweight, non-flammable, resilient and durable, warm to wear in winter and cool to wear in summer.

Storage

Fleeces should be placed in a fadge (wool bag), arranging roughly 4-6 fleeces per layer. Between layers, you should place a couple of sheets of newspaper, as a form of separation.

Avoid Contamination

Contamination of the fibre will greatly decrease the value of the fleece. Contamination of fleeces can be due to vegetable matter, dust, or pigmented fibres from nearby coloured animals.

It is also important to remove contaminants (such as straw, feathers, bailing twine, or other rubbish), from the shearing shed prior to shearing so that fleece lines remain cleaned and pure.

Dry the fleece

Any wet fleeces should be laid out to dry before placing in the wool fadges as fleeces that are wet and/or contain faeces can rot and contaminate the rest of the bale.

Crutching

As goats near shearing, keep them in well grassed paddocks and crutch them to remove daggy, stained areas of the fleece. By crutching your animals one month prior to shearing it helps to ensure minimal stains in the fleece.

Shearing

Shearing is to be done twice per year with no more than 7 months growth in one clip preferred.
